Boca Grande Pass is located on the West coast of Florida, a few short miles by water south of Palm Island. This deep water pass is the deepest in the state of Florida. It feeds into Charlotte Harbor and lies between the southern point of Gasparilla Island and the northern shore of Cayo Costa Island. Large amounts of water flow in and out of this pass and carry with it huge amount of food for the tarpon that arrive by the thousands. The fish begin to show up in early spring and congregate in the 80-foot deep hole just off the tip of Gasparilla Island.
Boca Grande Pass is the acknowledged tarpon fishing capital of the world. There’s no known place on this earth where these fish gather in the thousands to feed and spawn. This has made Boca Grande the place to fish for tarpon fishing on the west coast and all over the world. |
PRIME TARPON SEASON: MAY - JULY
|
|
During prime fishing season, (May thru July), thousands of tarpon are moving in and out of the pass daily. They travel in schools, or pods, to feed on threadfin herring, pumpkinseeds and crabs along the white beaches. Tarpon not only have gills but also an air bladder which causes them to roll and gulp air, their silver sides shining in the sun like giant mirrors. Pass fishing is booked on tides and is at the Captains discretion for departure times.
Styles of tarpon fishing
There are three basic ways to Tarpon fish with Manasota Key Outfitters; Pass fishing, Beach or Fly fishing.
All three represent the same thrill of sending a silver king skyward, but differ in the presentation of bait and party size. Some boats are capable of six person parties, availability will have to be checked in advance, so call early for the best tides. Beach or Harbor tarpon fishing are the same rates and are basically the same style of fishing, live bait or artificial sight fishing for Tarpon is as exciting as it gets. Fly trips are booked with a two person max, and are a true test of sportsmanship and angling talent. |
