Manasota Key to Boca Grande Pass Fishing Report: Tarpon and Snook Hotspots

The pristine waters stretching from Manasota Key down to Boca Grande Pass are currently offering spectacular world-class sportfishing. Unseasonably warm water temperatures hovering in the mid-to-high 80s have fully kicked off the summer migration. Mass schools of migrating Tarpon (Silver Kings) are stacked along the coastline. Trophy Snook are aggressively feeding as they group up tightly around the major passes.

Tarpon Action: Boca Grande and Coastal Beaches
Boca Grande Pass, globally renowned as the "Tarpon Capital of the World," is yielding massive numbers of fish.

The Pass Bite: Massive schools are moving through the pass on daily tidal cycles. The afternoon "hill tides" (strong falling tides) are producing the hottest and most chaotic action. Anglers are successfully drifting live blue crabs (with claws removed to avoid line tangles) or live pass-crabs deep into the water column.

The Beach & Harbor Sight-Fishing: Large pods of 50 to 100 fish are traveling along the beachfronts of Manasota Key and Palm Island. These fish are easily spotted rolling at first light. Free-lined live threadfin herring, scaled sardines, and 6-inch mullets casted gently ahead of cruising schools are drawing explosive strikes.

Pro-Tip: Due to incredibly clear coastal water, these fish can easily spot heavy tackle. Scale down your leader to 40lb to 60lb fluorocarbon and utilize 7/0 to 9/0 inline circle hooks to boost your hook-up ratio.

Trophy Snook: Passes, Pickets, and Backcountry
The late spring/early summer transition marks the peak of giant spawning Snook congregating around Southwest Florida’s inlets.

The Passes: Heavyweight snook ranging from 30 to over 40 inches are stacked along the rocky drops and strong current edges of Boca Grande Pass and Stump Pass. Fishing deep shorelines and structure with strong water movement is critical.

The Surf and Islands: The beaches of Palm Island and Manasota Key are holding numbers of slot and over-slot snook. Anglers looking for maximum action are targeting early morning incoming tides, walking the beach, or positioning boats just off the breaking surf.

Top Bait/Tactics: A live, frisky "whitebait" (scaled sardine) or a legal-sized live pinfish free-lined along the mangroves or surf trough will rarely be ignored. If artificial lure fishing is preferred, bouncing white or chartreuse paddletail jigs off the sandy bottoms or throwing topwater plugs at dawn is providing highly aggressive strikes.
